Finally, Anna wins... not completely

Lok Sabha, Govt say yes to Jan Lokpal but with riders; Anna slated to end his epic 12-day fast on Sunday 10am

New Delhi: The eight-hour long extraordinary debate on the Lokpal issue Saturday ended with Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee expressing "a broad sense of the house" that includes an in-principle acceptance of three key demands of Anna Hazare by the Lok Sabha.

There was, however, neither any resolution nor a voice vote that was expected at the end of the debate, just desk-thumping by members drawn from all parties. These included an agreement on the citizens' charter, the bringing of the lower bureaucracy under the Lokpal and the setting up of Lokayuktas in the state.

Mukherjee, also leader of the house, made it clear that the outcome of the proceedings will be submitted to the parliamentary standing committee examining the Lokpal bill. The standing committee will bring a revised legislation to the house, he said.

Michael Jackson crowned king of MTV VMAs - poll

LOS ANGELES - King of Pop Michael Jackson is gone, but he is not forgotten -- not by MTV Video Music Award voters.
Two days before the widely-watched awards show, MTV on Friday released a poll of the top moments chosen by voters in the program's nearly three decades with Jackson singled out for most iconic and best pop performances for a medley of songs he sang in 1995.
Jackson singing and dancing to "The Way You Make Me Feel," "Scream," "Beat It" and "Smooth Criminal" picked up 57 percent of the vote for most iconic performance, beating the likes of Madonna with "Like a Virgin" in 1984 and Lady Gaga's "Paparazzi" from 2009.
The "Thriller" singer, who died in June 2009 from a drug overdose, also got the nod for best pop performance with the same medley, again topping artists including Britney Spears, Justin Bieber, TLC and his own sister, Janet Jackson, who performed a tribute to Michael the year he died.
MTV annually gives away awards for best videos in what has become one of its most-watched telecasts. Last year's VMAs were seen by 11.4 million viewers, its biggest audience since 2002.
Perhaps more important than awards and stars, the program is known for its sometimes impromptu, often planned, outrageous moments that grab headlines around the world.
Last year, Lady Gaga showed up in a dress made completely of raw meat. Two years ago, Kanye West jumped onstage and grabbed a microphone from a stunned Taylor Swift to tell audiences that Beyonce, not Swift, should have won one award.
But where outrageousness is concerned, nothing beats the kisses shared among Madonna, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera at the 2003 show. It was voted the most outrageous moment of the VMAs history with 53 percent of the votes from some 15 million total ballots cast online.
The infamous kiss, during a performance of "Like a Virgin" and "Hollywood," beat out the fight between Kid Rock and Tommy Lee in 2007, Howard Stern appearing as Fartman and Diana Ross jiggling Lil Kim's breast at the 1999 show.
In fact, the flashy purple pantsuit Lil Kim wore, which left one breast exposed except for a pasty over her nipple, was picked by 39 percent of voters as the wildest outfit ever worn to the show, beating Lady Gaga's meat dress and Britney Spear's black leather biker ensemble from 2002.
Other results of the MTV poll, which also looked at best videos of the 1980s, 90s and 00s, as well as top performances in hip hop and rock, can be found at http://newsroom.mtv.com.
The VMAs air on Sunday, starting at 9 p.m. edt.

Stanley Kubrick made the first iPad, claims Samsung

Sydney, Aug 24 Hollywood filmmaker Stanley Kubrick designed the first ever iPad, and not Apple Inc, says rival company Samsung in a bizarre patent suit that cites the director's '2001: A Space Odyssey' as evidence, according to a media report.

The two companies are 'suing each other all over the world' for patent infringement, after Apple accused Samsung of 'blatant copying' of its products, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

Apple won a temporary injunction against Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Europe. In Australia, it forced Samsung to agree not to sell the device until it can satisfy Apple that it does not infringe on its iPad patents.

A patent case against the Galaxy Tab is also running in the US and Samsung has filed its reasons as to why Apple should not be granted an injunction.

One of Samsung's exhibits was a still image and a YouTube clip taken from Stanley Kubrick's 1968 film '2001: A Space Odyssey'. The clip shows two astronauts eating while at the same time using what appear to be personal tablet computers, the report said.

Samsung says this was an example of 'prior art' for the general design of the iPad.

It also cited a scene from the 1970s British TV series 'The Tomorrow People', which appears to depict a tablet computer.

Consultant and blogger Florian Mueller, who first uncovered the Kubrick reference, said it would be 'amazing' if the court agreed with Samsung.

Mark Summerfield, a senior associate with a Melbourne intellectual property law firm, believes Samsung 'may have a case'.

'Generally science fiction is not legitimate prior art to a utility patent, because it does not inform the public how to make the fictional apparatus,' said Summerfield.

But there was no reason why science fiction could not be 'invalidating prior art' to a registered design, he said.

'For example, if I were to copy the Star Trek communicator as a novelty mobile phone, I would have no right to claim a monopoly in that design. I did not devise it myself,' he said. 'I think that Samsung probably has a viable defence here.'

Find out how John lifted this bike

Veteran action director, Allan Amin reveals secrets of his art and talks about his most challenging stunts

Hindi films have always been known for mindless action sequences. Be it the low gravity kind or the racing bullet variety. In either case, there is usually a person scripting these bone-smashing, skull-crushing scenes. And while most only credit the actors delivering massive blows that reduce brick walls to rubble, the real heroes are the ones who strategically plan these marvelous feats. In a conversation with Yahoo! India, veteran action director Allan Amin reveals some of the secrets of his art and even points out the most challenging action scenes that he has crafted for some of the biggest Bollywood blockbusters.

1. In your career, can you point out some of the most challenging stunts that you've choreographed?
The most difficult sequences were in ‘Dhoom’ - jumping through a running train on a bike, the scene required John to jump through a running train on a moving bike. It was very difficult to shoot because both, the train and the bike were in motion and it becomes difficult to maintain balance even if you have a harness attached. Then another challenging scene was in Dhoom 2, where Hrithik and Abishek Bachchan’s body doubles were supposed to jump from a cliff and grab each other in mid-air. It was again very difficult because the cliff was 4000 feet high and grabbing each other during a free fall is scary and difficult no matter how much precautions you take. Even in ‘Force’ we have shot for a very difficult scene, the scene was where John was supposed to jump from a cliff and land on an air bag. During such scenes if at all the air bag gets punctured, it can cost him his life. So while doing this sequence, we all had our fingers crossed.

2. What kind of action sequences were required for 'Force' based on the brief from the director? How did you visualize them?
Nishikant was very clear about what he wanted. His brief to me was that he wanted some hardcore muscular action stunts with maximum intensity possible. We sat and planned with John on till what extent can we exploit his body for physical action. In the film, John plays an anti-narcotics officer and we had to design his actions accordingly. My brief was to show off John’s sheer muscle power. The stunts we had in mind were as raw as lifting a bike, chase sequences on top of moving trains, breaking somebody’s head, nose etc without using any prop.

3. What are the things that an action director need to keep in mind when conceptualizing a fight sequence?
Two things- script and the character. The action has to be in sync with the script of the film. What I was explained for ‘Force’ was that John is a narcotics officer; a good cop, the look that was explained to me was that of a huge muscular man. My actions were designed around these two pieces of information. I knew that to exploit the body, I need to involve more and more physical action unlike film that use gadgets and bikes and guns like ‘Dhoom’ or ‘Race’.

4. In Force, you have made John lift a bike, how did the idea strike you and how did you execute it?
As I said earlier, my brief was to show off John’s muscle power as much as possible and remain as raw as possible so we thought of the bike sequence, where John will just pick up a bike randomly and throw it on a guy. Actually, it was John’s idea to lift the bike himself without the ropes. We had arranged for a lot of safety measures to lift the bike because if at any moment the bike would have dropped or the lifting process would have gone wrong, it could have been not less than a fatal accident for John. So the ropes and harness were to be in place. Before doing the actual shoot with John, we first did a mock scene with one of my team members to check on the safety measures, once we were through with the mock shoot; we started shooting with John. But while doing the scene, he decided to try and lift it himself. We were little apprehensive in the beginning but later we decided to let him try and he pulled it off.

5. What were the challenges in directing the action sequences in ‘Force’ and how did you overcome them?
The biggest challenge was that I had to direct most of the sequences with John performing everything physically. We haven’t used any of those suave gadgets in our action, most of it is as rough and raw as possible. So to design everything keeping that in mind was a challenge because you have to keep the actor’s body and limitations in mind but thankfully, John had developed a body which carried off heavy-weight sequences also quite skillfully.

6. There has been a recent trend of exaggerated fight sequences in films, right from 'Dabangg' to 'Singham', why do you think this trend has become popular? Have you ever subscribed to trends or altered your art to match up with the trend? If not, why?
This trend has become popular because of the actors who have performed the sequences with conviction. I have never subscribed to these trends and will never alter my art to match up to it because I have got my own style of working, which has evolved over the years from ‘Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar’ to ‘Satya’ to ‘Mission Kashmir’ to ‘Dhoom’, ‘Dhoom 2’ and now ‘Force’.

7. What are the plus points of crafting an action scene for John? Are there action sequences that cannot be created for John or wouldn't suit John?
As I just mentioned, the biggest plus point of working with John is his physicality. His height and body allow him to pull off most stunts suavely and physical action sequences quite easily.

8. As an action director, which are your favourite films that had fight/ action scenes that you thought deserved to be applauded?
I would say ‘Bandit Queen’. It’s action sequences were as real as it can get.

Schoolgirl may die if she combs her hair

London, Aug 18 A schoolgirl in Scotland has a rare condition following which she has been asked not to comb her hair too vigorously as it could lead to her brain shutting down.
Megan Stewart, 13, has a rare condition - Hair Brushing Syndrome - which means she must avoid wearing polyester or touching balloons. Any contact with electrical charges could confuse her brain into switching itself off or sending signals to her heart and lungs to make them do so, Daily Express reported.
Stewart has to dampen her hair to reduce static and lie down before combing it and is banned from participating in school science experiments.
The teenager, from Wishaw, Lanarkshire, Scotland was diagnosed three years ago, after she collapsed as her mother -Sharon brushed her hair.
Her mother Stewart, 41, said: 'I was brushing her hair when she flopped over and her lips turned blue. I thought she was having a fit, so we called the paramedics. It was really scary.'
The girl was taken to a hospital where medics revived her. It was two months later that neurologists made the diagnosis.
Doctors at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children at Yorkhill in Glasgow, believe birth complications may be responsible for the condition.
She also suffers from asthma and dorsal stream dysfunction, a problem with the connection between her eye and brain which means she can't see fast-moving objects.
But the determined girl says: 'I know not to brush my hair too fast and if I feel unwell to stop doing it. I think I know what my limits are. I don't let it affect me and I can still live a normal life.'

10 Most Corrupt Indian Politicians

While everyone has been animatedly supporting Anna Hazare's fight against corruption, people seem to have forgotten who the people are who actually led to this situation.
The peak of irony was when Anna was, allegedly, lodged in the same jail that housed the people who were responsible for two of the biggest scams in the country ever. How must the authorities have felt when they saw Raja and Kalmadi fill their plates while Anna was on a fast because of their misdeeds?

Corruption has become an unavoidable part of politics and every now and then, one or the other politician re-affirms this fact.
Here is our pick of the 10 most corrupt politicians of India.

                                                 Suresh Kalmadi
Almost single handedly caused a loss of hundreds of crores of rupees to the country. The Commonwealth Games, organized by Kalmadi was no less than a loot with numerous reports of the magnum opus event being soaked in corruption making headlines way before the Games had even started. Apparently, out of Rs. 70000 crores spent on the Games, only half of the amount was actually spent. Owing to his involvement in the scam, Kalmadi was charged with corruption and sent to Tihar jail.
                                                        A. Raja

A scam worth Rs. 176,000 crore had former Union Cabinet Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Andimuthu Raja at the centre. A. Raja as he is generally called, was the prime accused in the 2G spectrum scam, which was the largest that the country had seen in a long time. Following the shocking exposure, Raja was indicted and forced to resign. Presently, he is too has been lodged at the Tihar jail and is awaiting his trial.
                                                     Mayawati

Mayawati has always been criticized for ostentatious display of power in her state. She has allegedly used her status as chief minister to amass large amounts of personal wealth. She was charged with corruption when the Taj Heritage Corridor Case was uncovered. Mayawati's birthdays have always been media events, where she usually appears decked in diamond jewellery and also accepts public donations for which, she often comes under fire. Her assets are worth millions of dollars and in the year 2007-08, she had paid an income tax of Rs. 26 crores, which placed her amongst the top 20 taxpayers of the year.

                                               Lalu Prasad Yadav

The fact that Lalu Prasad Yadav has been an accused in 63-odd cases serves for the fact that Lalu stands as one of the strongest competitor in the list. The biggest scam that rocked Lalu's political career was the fodder scam which involved the embezzlement of Rs. 950 crore approximately. The accusation of nepotism against him has come up time and again but hardly any action has been taken against him owing to his 'connections' in the government.

                                                 Madhu Koda

Former Jharkand Chief Minister, and only the third independent legislator to assume the office of chief minister in India, Madhu Koda was responsible for a scam worth over Rs. 4000 crore. The man exploited the state's natural resources by licensing illegal mining leases and stashing away the wealth amassed during the undertaking. Furthermore, the Maoists received a 30% share of the booty. Koda was arrested on charges of money laundering and is still in prison following the rejection of numerous bail applications.
                                        Mulayam Singh Yadav

Mulayam Singh Yadav is also known as one of the most corrupt ministers in the country despite not being directly involved in any major scams. Apart from his name being involved in appointments of tainted officers and mishandling of his power as chief minister, Mulayam Singh had one major allegation levelled against him– accumulation of disproportionate assets. The case drew limelight on his sons and daughter-in-law as they too were holders of the assests that amounted to crores of rupees.
                                                      Karunanidhi

The corruptions charges against M. Karunanidhi are so many that he is often referred to as the king or emperor of corruption. He was accused of lending support to the LTTE and was indicted for abetting the LTTE in the interim report which oversaw the investigation into Rajiv Gandhi's assassination.
Karunanidhi reportedly institutionalized corruption in the South. He was a leading player in the cash for votes scams that are common in the southern region, as well as notorious foe extreme nepotism shown under his rule. Not so surprising, is the fact that the main accused in the 2G scam, A, Raja, considers him to be his mentor.

                                                 Sharad Pawar

Very few people can miss the cosy relationship that Sharad Pawar shares with power and money.Every now and then, Pawar draws flak for alleged investments made by him and his family in various illegal projects. He was named by Abdul Karim Telgi, during a narcoanalysis test, stating that it was Pawar's brainchild to print fake stamp papers across the country and mint money. He was also accused in a multi-crore scam involving wheat imports and institutions headed by him and his close associates were served notices by the Bombay High Court for showing favoritism to his family.

                                                     Jayalalithaa

The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu has a staggering 46 corruption cases against her. Amongst the various scams were the Rs. 70 million coal import scam, Tansi land deal case, case of disproportionate assets and colour TV case, amongst many others. A raid in her residence and business establishments led to the seizure of some 28 kg of jewellery (worth Rs 51 crore), 91 Wrist-watches, 41 air-conditioners, 10,500 sarees, 750 pairs of footwears, etc. She along with her former cabinet colleagues and senior bureaucrats who worked with her are still facing investigation with regard to corruption.
                                               BS Yeddyurappa

The most recent politician http://www.mensxp.com/special-features/top-10/5458-meet-the-top-10-young-politicians-of-india.html to be caught in the web of corruption is former Chief Minister of Karnataka, B. S. Yeddyurappa. While he has a number of corruption lying against him, the one that toppled his career was his alleged involvement in the illegal iron ore export scam in districts of Karnataka. A lot of blame game followed and ended up with Yeddyurappa losing his ministerial post last month. Despite his denial, his image as one of the most corrupt politicians of the country will not fade anytime soon.

Apple sued by 27000 South Koreans

London, Aug 19 : Software technology giant Apple is facing a lawsuit brought by 27000 South Koreans who claimed it had invaded their privacy by storing a hidden log of their movements on their iPhones.
The practice emerged in April, when two British security researchers found the file on both iPhone handsets and the computers with which they were associated.
The unencrypted location data it contained stretched back almost a year, the Telegraph reports.
Apple was then ordered by a South Korean court to pay Kim Hyung-souk, a lawyer, one million pounds won in compensation as a result.
His firm, Mirae law, now represents 27,000 iPhone users in a class-action.
Each user is seeking the same compensation, which would mean a total payout of more than 15.2million pounds, the paper said.
A week after the existence of the hidden log was publicised, Apple announced that it would update iOS to fix a "bug" that made storing location data hard to turn off.
It also said it would stop backing up the file on the computer associated with each iPhone, and encrypt it

Have you forgotten your FB manners?

WHILE SUPPORT for Anna Hazare pours in on Facebook and Twitter at the speed of light, and the government plans to snoop on our Facebook accounts to check for anti-social activities, on the other side of the globe, teenagers in Boston are being educated about how to break up with dignity on Facebook.

Social media websites can spark revolutions and bring down governments and at the same time enable you to peek into the life of a former love interest and ruin his/her image. A post on Facebook or Twitter can have several social and political implications. To quote cyber law expert Pavan Duggal, “It is a potent game changer in our lives.” But is the iPad/ Blackberry/ Android generation really ready to handle social media – the platform and huge database of information it offers? “ It is a mixed bag. While there are youngsters who are out there making good use of the Internet, there are others who are not able to handle social media with maturity. It is hard to make a sweeping generalisation and say that youngsters are abusing the Internet.

What’s true is that today’s youth is alive to the power of social media and is ready to ride the tiger without realising the consequences,” says Duggal. He adds that five to six out of ten youngsters won’t think twice before doing something impulsively on a social networking website.

“There have been wake up calls. But they have been few and far in between. A lot of awareness and education is required for youngsters using the Internet. The government should include social media in the school curriculum. But unfortunately it is not a priority area for the government,” he says.

So when a clueless mouse-happy generation goes about posting objectionable pictures, taking zero-IQ quizzes, snooping on an ex’s profile and breaking up with lovers, there is a need of a code of etiquette that should be followed. We list some of them:

UNFRIEND

WHEN Femail Magazine carried an article on whether it is ethical to snoop on your ex’s Facebook profile, a reader wrote: “I was in a serious relationship for about a three-and-a-half years.

We had a sour break-up which left me feeling empty, but now I’m all upbeat to carry on with my life. My ex-girlfriend and I are on FB, but instead of snooping into each others’ lives we opted not to have any connections at all ever again. We have blocked and ignored each other since the time we had a break-up... and also we have made sure we don’t have any mutual friends, so we both remain away from what’s happening in our life or any updates about one another.” Besides blocking out the past, the unfriend application on FB can be put to some good use. A six-monthly friend filter procedure won’t do you any harm. You might have added some unwanted people to your friends list. You won’t regret the cleansing ritual.

RELATIONSHIP STATUS

THERE may not be a survey for this, but a change in the relationship status invites the maximum number of comments within an hour of posting it. It is the best way to attract attention. The relationship status platter on Facebook is full of choices – single, in a relationship, engaged, married, it’s complicated, open relationship, divorced and separated.

But just one word of advice — before advertising your relationship status and inviting a flurry of comments, consult your partner (or ex in case you want to go from ‘in a relationship’ to ‘single’) first. It should really come as a shock to him/ her.

NOT COOCHY-COO WALL

LOVE is no longer private. Sure our sensor board has no problems with kissing scenes. In fact with shows like Bigg Boss topping charts, voyeurism has reached its peak. But public displays of affection, and paeans of love on the Facebook Wall of your beloved is a bit too much to handle.

Posts that rightfully belong to the private message column are out for the whole world to read. “ It is a distraction and is pretty embarrassing. I often feel, how could I be friends with such filmi lovebirds? But that’s how some people are,” says Ankit Khurana, 34, businessman.

“We know you are in love, but at least have the discretion of letting some things be private,” he adds. Just a suggestion, learn the difference between a Facebook Wall and a message and save the coochy- cooing for the latter. No one is interested on how much you miss or love your ‘baby’. FB BREAK- UP HOW much courage do you really need to face your love interest (in whom you have lost interest) and talk out your differences and have an amicable break up? What’s disturbing is that there is a race among boys and girls as to who announces the break- up by changing his/her relationship status to single on Facebook. Yes it is lethal, quick and simple. A write-up on Gawker.com actually gives detailed guidelines as to how we can break up on Facebook, with minimum time, mouseclicks and keystrokes.

Maybe a mature break-up is too much to ask for in the age of FB but do youngsters realise the aftermath of sleeping, eating and breathing in a virtual world? However, there is a silver lining. The group of teenagers from Boston who were educated about how not to break up on FB, were told to face it, don't Facebook it.

PEEK A BOO

Your ex's profile on Facebook is like the most exquisite chocolate lying right in front uneaten and unattended. It’s as addictive as chocolate too. Never mind the bad similie but isn’t it true that you’re always tempted to peek into your ex's life? A survey has revealed that 40 per cent of women between the ages of 18 and 54 use Facebook to track their exes. But its not just women — men too admit that they do not block their exes and like to peek into their profiles every now and then.

“Facebook is a great way to maintain a link with your former love interest,” explains Dr Gitanjali Sharma, marriage and family counsellor.

“Everyday we get cases wherein people have rekindled old flames and started an affair with an ex all over again,” she says.

Once, a seven-month pregnant woman met Sharma saying that her husband was having an affair with his much-married ex-girlfreind in Canada. “They had got in touch with each other on Facebook and everyday they chatted over the Internet once the woman was asleep,” says Sharma.

PICTURE IMPERFECT

WE have forgotten how nice it used to feel to flip through the pages of an old moth- eaten album. The digital era offers us hundreds of pictures at a click.

They can be instantly uploaded on to a virtual album on a social networking website without the hassles of developing a reel of film and waiting for a day to get, say, just 36 photos.

No wonder we now have our entire life chronicled on Facebook.

But there’s a darker side to these quick uploads. Dr Sharma tells us about a teenage girl whose boyfriend posted her objectionable pictures on Facebook. “ It is a common practice among jilted lovers. Their value system goes for a toss,” says Dr Sharma.

Then there is the ‘tag phenomena’. Before tagging pictures of your best friend with her boyfriend, do them a favour — ask them first.

And with so much happening, parents too are lurking on Facebook, if only to spy on their children.

ADDICTED TO FB

FACEBOOK boasts of 25 million users in India and the average time Indians spend on the website is three hours a month. It lets you be witty and cool through status messages.

It allows you to spy on profiles.

It gives you a huge database of zero- IQ games to choose from. But this hobby soon turns into an addiction. There are compulsive status message addicts, who post a status message every hour and invite 20 comments and 50 likes.

When they can’t think of a status message witty enough, they simply write about their lunch.

Then there are the photo addicts and the game addicts. There are some who scoot for quizzes on Facebook and have no qualms putting up the result on their walls, no matter how embarrassing. So the whole world comes to know what kind of a kisser he/ or she is or her friend is. This is definitely not healthy. Facebook is fun but don't let it rule your life. It is just a website.
